What is Academic Coaching?

Academic coaching reassesses student’s scholarly decisions, study habits, and personal goals. Academic coaching addresses the development and implementation of explicit strategies for scholarly success. Academic coaching is not therapy or tutoring. Academic coaching focuses on how to learn and understand concepts. Academic coaching is a personalized program. Together, a student and personal academic coach will assess the expectations of a student’s teacher/professors, the demands of the course material, learning strengths and areas in need of improvement in order to focus on the best strategies to use for optimal success. An academic coach can help improve note taking, writing structure, public speaking, self-management, time management, textbook reading, test preparation, and test taking strategies.

How can I engage an Academic Coach?

An initial assessment includes an interview and review of current scholarly status and abilities. This initial assessment is conducted on a fee for service basis and is required before any longer term commitment between coach and client is possible. Individual coaching is typically conducted in-person. Most people choose weekly sessions lasting 60 minutes. Coaching groups and workshops are offered for increased peer support. Fees for academic coaching are payable in advance. Email drdevito@drdevito.com for an initial consultation appointment.
